In 2004, Washington Parks & People supported the creation of a mosaic for the Marvin Gaye Park, the Riverside Center, and the neighborhood of Deanwood. Mosaic artist, Jenny Carden, formed a group of artists called "Art on the Block" who spent 6 months training residents and volunteers in the art of mosaic making. The project was designed to honor local heros by placing their names permanently on the sidewalk. The project was also designed to show how beautiful recycled materials can truly be.
